My 2015 must read book list: Part 1

I’ve decide to make a list of books that I will promise myself to read in the new year. Most of the books I have never read and know very little about, a few are some of the books I’ve read in years past that I’d like to read again. This will be an on-going series as I’m still adding to my list.

 

1. Into The Wild – Jon Krakauer

I fell in love with the story of Christopher McCandless a little over a year ago and since then I’ve read many of the books surrounding his life including this one. It has however been a while since I could reads this book as I borrowed it the first time from the Library.

2. The Perks of Being a Wallflower – Stefan Chbosky

I must admit that when this book was in a social whirlwind I had prejudged misconceptions about it. But I did watch the movie and liked it, at least I liked the metaphorical side of it. So I’ve decided that this book should be given a chance in the new year.

3. The Wild Truth – Carine McCandless

I told you I was obsessed, didn’t I? This is another book about Christopher’s story that I am dying to read. It’s written from the perspective of his sister Carine  who is probably the only person who can understand what was going through his head at the time.

4. Tess of the D’urbervilles – Thomas Hardy

I have read this book about a million times and although not my favourite Hardy book, it is my most well loved book at home. I read this at least once every year (it takes some major concentration on my part) so it’s made it onto my 2015 list.

5. If I Stay – Gayle Forman

This book was made into a movie this year and although I haven’t seen it, I do remember seeing the trailer and wanting to go and see it. So instead of going straight to the cinema I decided I would read it first to get a grasp of the story.

6. Under The Banner Of Heaven – Jon Krakauer

I’ve only read Into The Wild so I am intrigued to read something else by Jon Krakauer. All I know of this book is that it is critically acclaimed and that it’s also a true story written in the investigative style that Christopher’s story is in.

7. Wild – Cheryl Strayed

In time for the Reese Witherspoon adaptation movie I will be reading this book early in the year. I love these kinds of stories where people have decided that their lives are not what they hoped, but instead of moping around they do something about it, and in the process surprise themselves.

8. The Great Gatsby – F.Scott Fitzgerald

This book takes me back to my College days. Sitting in a stuffy classroom talking about the green light and all it means to history while thinking “my teacher is completely bonkers” . But in retrospect this book is fantastic, and it’s great to dust off my old, battered and annotated copy to just enjoys sometimes.

9. Me Talk Pretty One Day – David Sedaris

I know very little about this book but from what I gather it is a collection of essays about the struggles Sedaris went through with his speech problems in his youth. As well as this it’s about his move to France and the language barriers he faced there too. As a student of Language I find this to be an interesting book that I can’t wait to read.

10. Night – Elie Wiesel

Although the World Wars left a path of destruction and death there was also some beauty that came from it. Endless amounts of poems and novels have been retold throughout the past 80 years that people learn when they’re young and never forget. This novel is the story of Elie and his father when they were sent to Auschwitz in the Second world war.
